GREATER DALLAS ORTHOPAEDICS OFFERS TREATMENTS FOR PATIENTS EXPERIENCING OSTEOMYELITIS

Dallas-based Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert treat the often complicated condition of osteomyelitis

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

23/12/2013

Dallas, TX ( connect2business.co.uk ) December 19, 2013 - Bones are an integral part of the body, helping one move and function on a daily basis. Because bones are so important, bone infection or inflammation (called "osteomyelitis") can become a serious problem.

Fortunately, Dr. Al Mollabashy and Dr. Nathan Gilbert, of Greater Dallas Orthopaedics, have one of the largest joint infection and revision practices in the country. Patients often seek treatment at the practice for a variety of complication bone conditions and infections, including osteomyelitis.

Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert explain that most cases of osteomyelitis are caused by staphylococcus bacteria, a type of germ commonly found on the skin of otherwise healthy individuals. Symptoms of osteomyelitis usually include severe pains, fever, fatigue and frequent nausea. While bones are normally resistant to infections, a situation must occur in which the bones become vulnerable. Some events which cause the bones to become vulnerable to infection include recent injury or orthopaedic surgery, a circulation disorder, or poorly controlled diabetes. Osteomyelitis can lead to serious complications such as septic arthritis, when infection within bones spread to nearby joints, or even bone death, which may require the limb to be amputated.

When it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of this condition, Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert order a combination of tests to determine the severity of each case. Blood and imaging tests, such as X-rays and CT scans, will be ordered to reveal the extent of bone damage. A bone biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing osteomyelitis, according to both doctors, since it determines precisely what germ has infected the bone. Knowing exactly what has infected the bone will allow the doctors to prescribe antibiotics or medication to treat and fight the infection.

While both Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert try to avoid surgery, some cases of osteomyelitis require it. The surgical procedure will consist of draining bacterial fluids out of the bone, allowing a healing process to begin. Since osteomyelitis can often be difficult to treat, taking preventative measures to reduce risks for infection following any surgery or injury. Speaking with a doctor about how to prevent infection (and by extension, ostoemyelitis) from occurring in the first place.

Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert have years of experience in diagnosing and properly treating the disease. They pride themselves on offering patients the best possible care. Contact Greater Dallas Orthopaedics today, to find out more about if this treatment is right for you.
