Stony Brook, NY ( connect2business.co.uk ) December 29, 2013 - The ongoing debate over whether saline implants are preferable over silicone is not as clear-cut or simple as one type being better than the other. New York-based plastic surgeon Dr. Mark D. Epstein explains that either option depends on what each patient is specifically looking for.

Generally, more women select silicone gel breast implants than saline breast implants, according to plastic surgery statistics. This is because silicone implants are perceived to feel more natural due to their texture, according to Dr. Epstein, who practices at the Center for Aesthetic Surgery, located in Stony Brook, NY.

"Due to the cohesive nature of silicone gel, a silicon implant has far less rippling and wrinkling than a saline implant," Dr. Epstein explains. "This is especially important for women with thin tissue, since irregularities in the implant contour, including rippling, will be painfully obvious with respect to the look and feel of the augmented breast."

Many patients are concerned about implant leaks, and make decisions about their implants based on outdated and misleading information. During the 1990s, there was a silicone breast implant scare in the media regarding silicone implant leakage being linked to auto-immune disorders such as lupus and fibromyalgia.

Since then, further studies have shown that silicone implants do not cause these health problems. Furthermore, improvements to the silicone gel shell and material have drastically decreased the instances of implant leaks and breakage. Saline implant leaks, which are also very rare, only release sterile salt water and therefore do not have a negative impact on the body.

Implant shape also plays an important role in whether patients choose saline or silicone. While saline implants are available in either a round or anatomical, which is also known as teardrop, shape, silicone gel implants only offer a round shape option. With regard to saline implants, anatomic implants create a more natural breast contour, according Dr. Epstein.

The augmentation procedure's incision technique should also play a role in implant selection. With silicone gel implants, the incision will need to be longer to than most saline implant incisions in order to accommodate the filled implant. Dr. Epstein recommends that those considering implants discuss all of the pros and cons of each type of implant with a board-certified plastic surgeon in order to better weigh their options.
