Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert treat multiple benign and cancerous tumors, including lipomas.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

24/01/2014

Dallas, TX ( connect2business.co.uk ) January 23, 2014 - A lipoma is a common, noncancerous soft tissue tumor, which occurs beneath the skin. Most commonly, they appear on the torso, neck, or upper thighs, though they can occur almost anywhere on the body. Lipomas are normally small, capsule-shaped growths that can be felt through the skin, although they are not usually considered painful.

Drs. Al Mollabashy and Nathan F. Gilbert, of Texas-based Greater Dallas Orthopaedics, explain that the exact causes of lipomas are still unclear. The growth of a lipoma is usually attributed to a major injury, although some patients may also be genetically predisposed to growing them. While patients of any age can experience this kind of growth, it is most common among middle-aged men and women. Diet and lifestyle are not considered major contributors to the growth of lipomas.

Lipomas are usually be diagnosed by their appearance alone. They have a soft, rubber-like consistency, and can remain the same size for years before growing. There is no known treatment that will completely prevent the growth of a lipoma.

Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert explain that, since lipomas are non-cancerous and cannot become cancerous, they do not need to be immediately removed. However, they add, surgery may become a consideration if the lipoma grows to the point that it becomes painful and uncomfortable enough to interfere with a patient's daily life. Surgical removal may also be necessary if the lipoma becomes infected, or drains any foul-smelling discharge.

In most cases, lipomas can be removed in Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert's office. The removal process begins with a local anesthetic injected around the lipoma, and a small incision is then made in the skin. The growth is then removed, and the incision closed with sutures. However, if the lipoma is located in an area of the body that cannot be easily accessed through a simple incision, Drs. Mollabashy and Gilbert may need to remove the growth in an operating room, while the patient is under general anesthesia.

Dr. Gilbert and Dr. Mollabashy are experts at diagnosing and treating both cancerous and benign tumors, including lipomas, in both children and adults. With a vast amount of experience and expertise, these surgeons have built one of the most esteemed orthopedic practices in the country. Additionally, their practice is one of the few in Texas to provide comprehensive care for patients who suffer from bone disease.
