FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

26/06/2023

PI(3,4)P2 can act as a lipid second messenger. In mast cells, 08:0 PI(3,4)P2 (ammonium salt) plays a key role in protein kinase B (PKB) phosphorylation on Ser473 sites.

The Structure of Phospholipids
Phospholipids are important components and the basic backbone of biological membranes, consisting of fatty acid chains, glycerol molecules, phosphate groups and polar head groups. The structure of phospholipids consists of a hydrophilic head region and a hydrophobic tail region. The hydrophilic head region consists of phosphate groups and polar head groups, including choline, ethanolamine, serine and inositol. Hydrophobic tails consist of fatty acid chains, usually consisting of a combination of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. These tails are nonpolar and repel water, making the interior of the lipid bilayer impermeable to water-soluble substances. Phospholipids are arranged in a bilayer in an aqueous environment, with the hydrophilic head facing water and the hydrophobic tail facing inward, forming a stable lipid membrane. This structure forms the basic backbone of biological membranes, providing a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings and regulates the movement of molecules in and out of the cell.

Important Biological Functions of Phospholipids
First, the most important structural function of phospholipids is to serve as the basic skeleton of biological membranes and as a barrier between the cell and the outside world. Besides, phospholipids have important functions in cellular signaling and as precursors for the synthesis of signaling molecules from other lipid classes. Phospholipids are also involved in various physiological processes, including cell adhesion, membrane transport and the formation of specialized membrane structures.

Applications of Anionic liposomes
Basic Biological Research:Phospholipids are widely used in scientific research as tools for in vitro studies of cell membrane structure and function.

Pharmaceuticals: Phospholipids are excellent drug delivery carriers which can be designed for targeted drug transport to improve the controlled release of drugs in vivo.

Cosmetics Manufacturing: Phospholipids can significantly improve the texture, stability and permeability of cosmetics and are one of the important raw materials for the cosmetics industry.

Food Processing: Phospholipids are often used as emulsifiers in food processing and can help stabilize emulsions through preventing oil-water separation to extend shelf life.

Industrial Production: Phospholipids have applications in the production of lubricants, detergents and coatings.
