Contract: Part time, Fixed Term Contract (21 hours per week) - 3 years contract
Hours: Monday-Friday (09:30-17:00)

Sandwell African Caribbean Mental Health Foundation (SACMHF) was founded in 1994 to provide culturally responsive mental health services for Black people living in Sandwell who were affected by Mental ill health.

This was during a time when there was a growing body of evidence which informed of the lack of culturally responsive services for Black people and the poor experience and outcomes for those using mainstream mental health services when compared to the wider community. SACMHF continues to operate today and now deliver various culturally responsive mental health services for the Black community in Sandwell and West Birmingham.

Counseller - The Role

You will be responsible for setting up this new service funded by the National Community Lottery Fund. You will recruit and line manage a counsellor and both of you will provide culturally responsive counselling sessions to individuals. You will work to widen the service offer and deliver wellbeing groups including group sessions focused on psychoeducation.

Main Responsibilities;

• Work with the Senior Counsellor to set up and implement a culturally focused counselling service predominantly but not exclusively for people of Black heritage recovering from mental ill health.
• Manage a caseload of clients assessing the suitability of service users and individuals for counselling, as appropriate. To provide counselling to people referred to the service and to evaluate therapeutic interventions offered.
• Primarily offer individuals counselling, but to be flexible to incorporate group work as appropriate.
• Work within a culturally competent framework, respecting the individuals cultural, spiritual, and social needs.
• Maintain and adhere to the codes of ethics laid down by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).
• Liaise with a range of Health Professionals including, GP’s and other relevant agencies regarding prospective referrals.
• Contribute to the reviews and case conferences of individual service users as appropriate.
• Liaise with other professionals regarding the care of service users as appropriate.
• Actively participate in a team approach that promotes equality, empowerment, and self-determination.
• Support a trainee counsellor through a process of mentoring and line management.
• Hold responsibility and accountability for their own actions, ensuring appropriate support and supervision is sought when required.
• Undertake regular clinical supervision in line with BACP requirements and internal appraisal process.
• Maintain up-to-date clear client records and case notes in line with the policies of the BACP.
• Continuing personal development to be acquired through undertaking specialist training, specialist short courses, participation in line-management supervision, personal therapy, and clinical supervision.
• Complete weekly client data capture using the customer relationship manager tool used by SACMHF which is known as, Case Manager.
• Data capture includes regular completion of assessments, surveys etc including PHQ -9 and GAD -7, user satisfaction and clinical outcomes with each service user.
• Liaise with SACMHF colleagues where and when required to achieve organisational objectives and in negotiation with line manager.
• Provide reports as necessary on the service and service developments for the website annual reports etc.

Counseller - What we need from you:

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential;

• Professionally qualified such as Counselling diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 150 counselling hours.
• Experience of working with individuals with mental health and psychosocial issues
• Knowledge of issues that may characterize the experiences of people from a Black African and Caribbean heritage.
• Experience of line managing paid and unpaid staff providing supervision and appraisal
• Experience of providing outcome focused interventions that support emotional resilience and recovery.
• Experience of producing organisational reports.
• Strong organisational skills and time management skills.
• Good IT skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office software products.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
• A strong team player.
• Able to develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, staff, and the wider team.
• A calm professional and positive approach with a focus on user satisfaction.
• A collaborative approach.
• A flexible creative and solution focused approach.

Desired;

• Experience of delivering PowerPoint presentations
• Hold BACP accreditation or equivalent or demonstrate a willingness to work towards
• 2 years post qualification experience
• Experience of delivering Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Special Requirements;

• Your work must be within reasonable daily travelling distance of your home.
• You will be required to attend events and meetings at sites regularly across the locality.
• A satisfactory enhanced DBS check will be required.
• You should be able to work outside normal hours occasionally when required.
