Chair for the Board of Trustees (Voluntary)

Hours : The Chair normally gives up to 3-4 days per month

Location: Hybrid/Milton Keynes

Salary: Voluntary with Expenses


This is an exciting time to be joining us as our new Chair, working alongside Kate Broadhurst, our new CEO. Kate has strong connections with the local business community in Milton Keynes and a passion to secure Willen firmly on the map as the local provider of specialist palliative care services. You will have the opportunity to guide as she leads us into a new phase of growth and development.

Willen Hospice cares for end-of-life patients and their families in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas and has been doing so for over 40 years. The Hospice is run by local people for local people. We are proud to deliver calm, compassionate care in a tranquil environment, helping people to really make the most of the time they have left with their loved ones.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for a Chair to join the Board of Trustees of Willen Hospice. Someone who has a passion for the provision of end-of-life palliative care for patients and their families, healthcare, an understanding of governance and excellent financial acumen and experience of strong leadership.

With the rise of ageing population numbers in the region, public support and awareness of palliative healthcare, combined with the charity’s strong growth ambitions and financial goals, this role offers a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate.

Knowledge, skills and experience required

• To have an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of

the Board of Trustees and be prepared to access information and training to develop this

• To be committed to Nolan’s Seven Principles of Public Life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity,

accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership

• To be able to operate strategically and to work effectively with the Board of Trustees and CEO

to develop the strategic vision for the organisation

• To have leadership skills for both leadership of the Board of Trustees and the organisation

• To have an understanding, knowledge or experience of key areas (Palliative health, the voluntary sector, NHS and local government, commercial business and development) that will support the charity.
