Accounts and Tax Assistant

Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom. Role will be office based with opportunities to occasionally work from home.

Position: Part time (18 hours a week)

Salary: FT £30,000 - 35,000, to be pro rated to number of hours

Role Summary:

We are actively looking for an experienced accountant to join our rapidly growing practice. The main responsibility of the candidate will be to prepare self-assessments and sole trader tax returns. The successful candidate should have a good understanding of UK personal taxes although further training for any gaps in knowledge will be provided. The ability to be diligent, organised, and work as part of a small team is vital. It is envisaged that the role will not be client facing initially, however this could evolve over time as our practice continues to grow.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit annual self-assessment tax returns for individuals and sole traders;
  • Support practice directors to prepare analysis and high level tax planning advice to clients;
  • Prepare year-end accounts for sole traders and partnerships;
  • Prepare annual and other communications for clients to explain tax-related issues, obligations, and potential tax savings;
  • Liaise with HMRC as required to resolve administrative or minor tax matters;
  • Support directors with client matters during HM Revenue & Customs inquiries and investigations;
  • Onboard new clients onto our systems;
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure a timely and accurate delivery of services; and
  • Stay updated with the UK tax law to identify issues that impact our clients.

Essential qualifications and skills:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Proficient in self-assessment tax return preparation for individuals and sole traders.
  • Good understanding of UK tax laws, regulations, and HMRC practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax-related issues in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively
  • Familiarity with TaxCalc and QuickBooks Online
