Our client is seeking to employ a Residential Worker to join its enthusiastic, vibrant, and hardworking team. 

As one of only two specialist horse racing colleges in the UK, this third sector provider delivers training for people in both racing and other equine industries.  Located in the scenic grounds of a private estate near Doncaster, it achieved Ofsted Grade 2 for overall effectiveness and Grade 1 for both Behaviour and Attitudes and Personal Development in December 2022.

The Role

The role of the Residential Worker is to supervise and provide pastoral care and support to learners during the hours they are not in formal evening programme classes / lectures or on the yards with the horses.  They are responsible for discipline, administering and maintaining learner records, and the completion of appropriate accident reporting documentation for incidents / accidents that occur outside of normal working hours, including weekends. 

Residential staff are allowed to sleep on shift, from the hours of midnight to 5.30am if all learners are safe and accounted for, and there are no issues in the Residential block.

The Residential Team works a six-week rota, the hours of work for this position are as follows:

  • Week 1 – Monday - 8.00pm to 8.00am & Saturday and Sunday 5.30pm to 10.30pm
  • Week 2 – Nil
  • Week 3 – Friday 5.00pm - 10.30pm & Saturday & Sunday 5.30pm - 10.30pm
  • Week 4 - Friday 6.00pm – 8.00am
  • Week 5 - Friday 5.00pm - 10.30pm & Saturday & Sunday 5.30pm - 10.30pm
  • Week 6 - Friday 5.00pm - 10.30pm & Saturday & Sunday 5.30pm - 10.30pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide pastoral care and support to learners during the hours they are not in formal evening programme classes / lectures or on the yards with the horses. 
  • Accountable for the running of the residential accommodation.
  • To organise the re-allocation of student rooms as and when required, and only after consultation with, and permission of the College Counsellor, ensuring: -
    • To check rooms for damage and defects on arrival and departure or if a learner moves rooms during the course.
    • To ensure the room check proforma is fully completed and signed on the exit of the learner from the room.
    • To ensure that the College Counsellor is informed of any damage or defects which may affect the return of the learner room deposit.
    • To ensure a new room check proforma is issued, completed, and signed.
  • To keep a detailed diary of the learner meals (evening and weekend) so that this can be checked against the weekly menus.
  • To monitor the learners’ taking evening and weekend meals to ensure that they are eating, reporting any concerns to the College Counsellor.
  • To make sure that all cutlery and crockery from the early breakfast and supper meals is cleaned and put away.
  • To supervise learners during the hours they are not in the formal evening programme classes / lectures or on the yards and be responsible for discipline.
  • To arrange transport for learners to and from medical appointments as required.
  • To administer learner records from intake through the period of the learner stay.

Skills and Qualifications

  • GCSE’s or equivalent, including mathematics and English.
  • First Aid at Work certificate or be prepared to work towards and achieve it.
  • Level 2 Safe Handling of Medication qualification or be prepared to work towards and achieve it.
  • An awareness of equality and diversity issues in a training/educational environment.
  • Proactive and enthusiastic with a positive flexible approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent awareness and practise of confidentiality.
  • Good knowledge, understanding of and adherence to a professional code of conduct, within an education setting.
