We’re looking for a Community Builder to join our team and help residents unlock the potential in their communities.

West Oxfordshire District Council is a forward-looking council, putting residents first and working in partnership to support our communities. We are delivering an ambitious Council Plan for the district that is focused on important local priorities including affordable housing, climate and ecological action, helping our economy to grow and building communities. We also provide a range of important local services that make a positive impact to our district on a daily basis including planning, housing, waste and recycling collections, leisure centres, community safety and environmental health. Joining West Oxfordshire District Council you will be helping us achieve our goals for the district and play a part in supporting our communities, our businesses and our environment.

About the role

As a Community Builder, you will embed yourself within neighbourhoods across West Oxfordshire, building strong relationships with residents, local groups, and organisations. Taking an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, you’ll listen, observe, and support communities to use their existing strengths to increase connection, wellbeing, and resilience. You’ll empower residents to bring their ideas to life.

Your work will contribute to building happier, healthier, and more connected communities while reducing pressure on local services and supporting West Oxfordshire District Council’s vision.

Some of your responsibilities: 

  • Meet with residents and groups to identify their interests.
  • Create spaces that allow people to come together, get to know each other, build trust, and share skills.
  • Share knowledge on how to access funding so that residents can get started with their ideas or projects. 
  • Develop in conjunction with members of the Community Wellbeing team a method of keeping records, evaluation and ensure local stories are being captured.
  • Share learning, best practice and key findings regularly with the wider District Council team and partners.

This is a new role which will cover North Carterton. Within the District, there are plenty of places to see and visit whether you love hiking or cycling.  With our agile working ethos: you will be spoilt for choice.  

You will need…

  • A minimum of 5 qualifications equivalent to NVQ level 2 or GCSE at Grade C/4 or above, must include Maths and English
  • 2 years’ experience in a community wellbeing and/or public engagement field of work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to identify and respond to community needs and opportunities
  • Ability to inspire others to think and behave differently Familiar with monitoring impact, storytelling, and sharing best practices

Special Conditions…

  • You will be expected to work reasonable additional hours in line with the needs of the service.
  • There may be a requirement to work at other locations to meet the needs of the business.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • DBS
  • Ability to travel / access to a vehicle for work purposes.
