Part-time (25 hours per week) Payroll Assistant

£35,000-£40,000 per annum, pro-rata

We are currently working with a centrally based Cambridge organisation who are seeking a Payroll & Pensions Officer to join their Finance team. This role involves managing and administering the accurate and timely payment of staff salaries, ensuring compliance with statutory deductions, and maintaining integrity in reporting systems. The role also includes benefits administration and providing analytical support to the Finance Manager and Senior Bursar. 

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Payroll Management: Process monthly payroll, including handling starters and leavers, ensuring all statutory obligations are met. Maintain accurate payroll records and compliance with statutory regulations.
  • Pensions Administration: Manage all pension schemes, prepare information for monthly and annual returns, and ensure timely submissions to pension providers.
  • Reporting and Compliance: Prepare month-end payroll summaries, annual pay review reports, and liaise with external auditors for year-end audits. Responsible for all aspects of PAYE taxes and monthly RTI submissions to HMRC.
  • Employee Support: Serve as the first point of contact for all pay and pension-related queries from employees and Fellows. Provide support and advice on pay, taxation, and national insurance matters.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience in payroll management and a sound knowledge of the UK tax system.
  • Education: A University degree and/or recognised accountancy qualifications are preferred although not essential.
  • Skills: Excellent planning, organisational, and problem-solving skills. Proficient in Excel, Word, Access, and payroll software.
  • Attributes: Absolute discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
