Job Role: School Caretaker

Location: Chelmsford, Essex

Contract Type: Full-Time, Long-term Permanent

Hours: 10:00am-18:00pm

Salary: £16–£18 per hour

Complete Classroom Services are seeking a reliable, skilled, and proactive General School Caretaker to support the daily upkeep, safety, and smooth running of school premises. We are working with a group of schools in Chelmsford with full-time roles available for immediate start.

About the Role:

As a School Caretaker, you will play a key role in maintaining school buildings and grounds to ensure a safe, clean, and functional environment for pupils, staff, and visitors. You will support site operations, carry out routine maintenance, and assist with security and health & safety responsibilities.

Key responsibilities:

• Carry out general maintenance, repairs, and basic DIY tasks across the school
• Oversee the cleanliness, safety, and readiness of school buildings and outdoor areas
• Unlock and lock the school premises, ensuring all areas are secure
• Conduct regular site checks, including health & safety and fire safety inspections
• Assist with planned and reactive maintenance tasks
• Manage contractors on-site when required
• Support with setting up rooms, moving furniture, and preparing spaces for school events
• Ensure walkways, playgrounds, and access routes are safe and clear
• Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering supplies
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff

The ideal candidate would have:

• Previous experience as a school caretaker, premises assistant, or similar role
• Good working knowledge of general repairs and maintenance (basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc.)
• Strong understanding of health & safety requirements within a school environment
• Key holder experience
• Good communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a wider site team
• Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
