DENTAL EXAMS ARE NOT JUST ABOUT TEETH AND GUMS

When making an appointment with the dentist, a number of questions are probably running through your mind.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

19/07/2013

Brooklyn, NY ( connect2business.co.uk ) July 19, 2013 - When making an appointment with the dentist, a number of questions are probably running through your mind. To determine what plan of treatment needs to be completed, the dentist will need to go through a series of steps to determine what it is that they are dealing with.

First, a complete dental and medical history will be taken. Some of the key issues that help determine whether there is a problem with your teeth can be related to any medications you take, whether you had past dental treatment, lifestyle habits and medical issues like diabetes. All of the factors play a role in your dental health.

Next, Dr. Langer will take x-rays via digital means. Countless advantages exist in this type of technology such as a reduction in radiation, ease of copies for insurance purposes and more enhanced resolution. Before the exam begins, much of the treatment plan will already be formed.

A clinical exam is about more than just looking to see if there are cavities. The exam entails palpitating glands and checking them and their muscles surrounding the neck and head area. If you experience soreness or pain in these muscles, Dr. Langer will be able to provide you with an informed diagnosis. He will also check for clicking sounds, trouble opening and closing your mouth or any movements out of the ordinary.

During the exam, he will also perform a check for oral cancer. He evaluates your entire mouth, lips, tongue, gums, soft tissue and surrounding areas. Anything suspicious looking will be evaluated, photographed and measured. If further treatment is required, you will be provided with a referral to a specialist to treat your condition.

Lastly, your teeth and gums are evaluated. A small probe is used to measure the height of the gums to see if there is any loss around your teeth. Notes are taken about the measurements, mobility, swelling and other health related issues. He will also look at your occlusion to see how the teeth join together. The occlusion plays a pivotal role when it comes to restoring or replacing any missing teeth. Dr. Langer will also check for any cavities, recession, unusual wear facets, spaces between your teeth and anything out of the ordinary.

Once everything is completed, Dr. Langer may require additional information to form a proper diagnosis. It can include models of your teeth, photographs and bite records to form a complete overview of your dental health history.
